Black and Decker Compact Drills

Design Refresh
One of the main goals for the project was to refresh the look of the current compact drill. It is one of the most popular drills that Black and Decker makes at it sold all over the world.

In many instances a project starts with black and white thumbnail sketches, then refined later in color
renderings and sketches. Here you can see some of the earlier development in which I was experimenting with color breakup up on the
outside of the product.

In this project we were not only refreshing the current compact drill we were also trying to develop a signature
that we would span across a few other drills that other team members were simultaneously working on. There were various features that needed to be incorporated onto each drill and various battery voltage platforms that the drills needed to accommodate.

Handmade Foam models
After the sketch development and many, many collaborations sessions with my teammates. I did some foam models to start exploring the form and color breaks that we could achieve on the product. These are entirely hand made and only take a few hours. They are useful to show team members the design concept in mind. Some designs features were carried through to the final product and some were not .

After the main design direction was established me and another designer worked together to fine tune the designs. He was working on another drill that would be in the same product family as the one I was working on. The key was to keep the same design aesthetic but also build in differentiation between the two units.

OOne of the handmade foam models for the 18vlaser versions. The biggest challenge on the 18v model was the disguising the mass at the bottom. It was enormous and still is. But I think I disguised it pretty well.
